Howdy!

We hope you are safe and warm. Joe is at Soma Ranch surviving the “Artic freeze”, while Helen has popped over to the UK to see her parents. PLEASE NOTE TOMORROW (MONDAY 10AM CLASS) WILL BE ONLINE ONLY… stay safe.

Our theme this week is “The Protector.”

Rather than being about fear or restriction, The Protector is your inner helper, guiding your energy, holding boundaries, and keeping you safe. It works in partnership with your Controller and other inner voices to help you move through life with care, confidence, and presence. Read more and consider joining us for classes with this focus on Saturday Morning.

We encourage you to stay active, enjoy life and dance whenever possible. We have some fabulous classes and retreats coming up to help you in this direction and would love you to join us. And remember when you sign up for February Hero’s journey by the 28th you can bring a friend for free.

Blue Monkey PlayDay Class on Saturday with Helen at 10am

 

Join us this Saturday at 10am for a very special Blue Monkey Soma Faith class as we celebrate the conclusion of our first Hero Month in the 365-Day Hero Journey Program. Our theme is The Innocent: the archetype of play, illusion, wonder, magic, and childlike joy.

What is Blue Monkey?
Blue Monkey is our most playful, co-creative class format. Participants bring song suggestions around the theme of The Innocent (think play, magic, illusion, imagination, and delight). Helen then creates movement on the fly, improvising with the music, the energy in the zoom room, and whatever Spirit stirs in the moment.

You can laugh with her or at her (depending on the moment), and together we co-create something beautiful and unexpected.

In this space, many things tend to appear:

…and many things can disappear:

The Innocent invites us back into trust, wonder, playfulness, and hope. It reminds us how to soften, how to delight in simple things, and how to move through the world with curiosity instead of control. All music requests for this class will center around play, illusion, magic, imagination, and lightness of being.

As we close out our beautiful month with The Innocent, we now turn the page to our next chapter in the 365-Day Hero Journey: The Ordinary Man. This upcoming month invites us to celebrate the sacredness of being fully human; not exceptional, not perfected, not extraordinary, but real, relatable, and right where we are. We’ll explore the quiet power of belonging, the deep comfort of shared experience, and the surprising freedom found in healthy conformity, in choosing to participate, to fit in just enough to be held by community, rhythm, and routine. Together, we’ll honor the beauty of the everyday, the dignity of simplicity, and the grace of knowing we don’t have to stand out to be deeply seen and loved.

The Story of Blue Monkey Classes

More than 25 Years ago Helen Terry (Soma Ranch Owner) began teaching an Improvisation class once a week. The experienced evolved into being called a Blue Monkey Class. February Soma Hero Journey: Honoring Ordinary Life and Celebrating being human.

This month we’re moving with the archetype of The Ordinary Man: the part of us that grows slowly, learns through repetition, and keeps showing up imperfectly. After beginning the year with The Innocent (belonging and trust), February grounds us in what comes next: the sacred work of becoming human.

This is not symbolic only. It’s somatic. We’ll let the body teach what words alone cannot:

You cannot skip stages.
You cannot rise without the ground.
You cannot walk without wobbling.

And nothing about that is failure.

The Ordinary Man archetype reminds us:
You don’t have to be extraordinary to be meaningful.
Your ordinary life is the exact place growth happens.

February is for the person inside of us who feels behind, tired of striving, or longing for grounded, embodied movement and spirituality.

You are not behind.
You are becoming.

Join us this month as we honor slow growth, embodied faith, and the sacred dignity of ordinary life.

Each month we spotlight a different hero archetype through dance, movement, exploration, discussion, and education.

All experiences will be online via Zoom with 1-7 day replays.

There will be live movement classes 10am Monday, Thursday, Saturday, 8am Fridays, plus Saturday 8:45 5 Stages Developmental Experiences, all via zoom with replays.

Helen will teach the majority of these classes, Irene will continue to provide Feldenkrais experiences and Natasha and Gigi teach Nia.

You can also enjoy rePLAY experiences including dance breaks, EFT tapping, Evolutionary Mystic Meditations and more varying from 10 - 45 minutes with 3 day replays.

Beyond continuing to provide our regular somatic (Body Centered) movement experiences that support your physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing, this new 12‑month, 365‑day, project aims to

  • deepen our understanding of the personalities within us by exploring them through movement, exploration and education.

  • develop additional resources for self‑awareness and fascination

  • move toward being the best humans we can be (yes! let’s dream and aim big LOL)

The 12 hero archetypes, popularized from Carl Jung's work, are universal character patterns used in storytelling, branding, and psychology, representing core human motivations and experiences, and include the Innocent, Everyman, Hero, Caregiver, Explorer, Rebel, Creator, Lover, Jester, Sage, Magician, and Ruler, each seeking different things like freedom, connection, or mastery. 

The 12 Archetypes:

  • The Innocent: Seeks happiness and safety; optimistic, simple.

  • The Everyman: Wants to belong and connect; relatable, down-to-earth.

  • The Hero: Aims to prove worth through courageous action; competent, disciplined.

  • The Caregiver: Desires to help and protect others; nurturing, generous.

  • The Explorer: Seeks freedom and new experiences; adventurous, independent.

  • The Rebel: Wants revolution and to break rules; disruptive, transformative.

  • The Creator: Aims to build something of enduring value; innovative, artistic.

  • The Lover: Seeks intimacy, connection, and passion; sensual, loyal.

  • The Jester: Wants to live in the moment and bring joy; fun, playful.

  • The Sage: Seeks truth and understanding; wise, knowledgeable.

  • The Magician: Wants to make dreams come true; visionary, powerful.

  • The Ruler: Seeks control and order; authoritative, leader. 

How They're Used:

These archetypes help authors create relatable characters, build strong brands by aligning with consumer desires, and offer frameworks for personal growth by identifying one's dominant patterns. 

In 1996, as a Nia Technique trainer, realizing I needed to do more of my own inner work and be better able to hold space for leading people through embodied movement experiences, I began a master’s in Alternative Dance Therapy at the Jung Center in Houston. That started a 30-year journey of fascinated interest in authentic movement, archetypes, and somatic (body centered) healing.

Snow Moon Overnight Retreat Feb 1 - 2

On Sunday evening, February 1, 2026, we gather beneath the Full Snow Moon for an intimate overnight retreat at Soma Ranch: a sacred pause to mark the turning of the season, listen deeply, and come home to the wisdom of the body.

““The February full moon rises as winter begins to soften. Traditionally known as the Snow Moon, it invites us into stillness, nourishment, and quiet illumination. This moon does not ask for striving, it asks for presence, rest, and honest reflection.

This overnight retreat is a container for slowing down and remembering what supports life within us.

What This Night Holds

As the moon lifts into fullness, we will move gently between embodied practice, silence, shared ritual, and rest. The Soma sacred land itself becomes our teacher, open sky, water, firelight, and the steady rhythms of nature (and donkey calls) guiding us back to what is essential.

Together, we will:

  • Arrive and ground through simple, somatic practices

  • Gather under the full moon for reflection and intention

  • Honor what is ready to be released and what longs to be nurtured

  • Rest deeply in community, held by the land and the night

  • Wake gently into the morning with nourishing food, integration and closing practice

This retreat is designed to feel

  2. listening rather than fixing

Hero's Journey Embodied Retreat Feb 5 - 9

This February, you are invited into a 5-day Hero’s Journey retreat at Soma Ranch: a sacred pause to listen deeply, move honestly, and remember who you are becoming.

Rooted in the 12 Hero Archetypes, this immersive retreat weaves together somatic practice, spiritual reflection, and communal witness to guide participants through a living, embodied journey of transformation.

Each day invites you to explore different archetypal energies, not as concepts, but as lived experiences felt in the body.

Flounce on Monday with Helen at 10am

 

Fondly called “Flounce” this somatic experience begins and ends with the same song. A fun and novel way to deliver an embodied class (end as we began yet sense the different). Notice how you feel in the song at the beginning of the experience, then notice how you feel at the end with the same song. Self Healing can be defined as any thing that feels better. If you notice anything feels better, recognize this as self healing and give body gratitude.

Focus: At the beginning of class we introduce the concept flow and bounce, how the body thrives on the dynamic ease. We physically get a sense of shifting our connective tissue by softly moving arms in the circle. We Enter with a question. Which will serve me best for class: flow or bounce?

Preparation: In the first song we play with rhythm and flow through the 13 joints, starting with one side, then the other, the whole body. The next few songs build the concept of isolating flow and bounce to move towards integration into flounce. In the peak of Move in Flow, we play with the concept of bouncing a ball like playing basketball and acting as if we have high level skills :-). The songs progressively move into flounce (a combinations of flowing and bouncing). Lovers Rock is Helen’s favorite song, rich words, music and something magical comes through from flow, bounce and flow.

At the end of class we often Exit with a 2 question quiz:

1. what do you choose to step out with to serve you in your day best, flow or bounce?

2. what do you choose to step out with to serve you well if you can choose flow, bounce OR flounce.

Helen & Joe enjoy the unexpected, including snow!

Howdy!

This year has been filled with unpredictable situations and we are only 15 days in!

Joe and Helen (Soma Ranch owners) took a spontaneous trip to our PNW Soma Hiker’s Cabin at Lake Cushman in Olympic National Park to secure and repair the property after a guest had caused some damage. We made a point to appreciate the time away, enjoyed taking care of the things that needed attention, and gave gratitude for the hundreds of past and future guests who continue to treat our beloved short‑term rental with respect. This is an example of our focus for the week: “The Controller.” While we have little control over what happens, what we can gain control over is how we choose to respond. Part of our delight was unexpected weather, we had snow!!

Helen then turned around and flew to Denver to attend the funeral of a very special, dear friend, Loretta Milo. Chuck, her husband, showed remarkable courage and steadfast tenacity as he stood to give the eulogy, sharing that Loretta was not only his wife but also his closest friend. May we all be encouraged to live life fully every single day , to make that call, take that step, do that thing and not wait until tomorrow, because we truly do not know if there will be one.

A precious friend insisted Helen stay in their home, offering extended, tender care and warm hospitality that nourished Helen’s grieving heart and restored her soul. The day after the funeral, on her way to the airport, Helen was able to connect with 3 fabulous colleagues, (Lola, Christina and Dana) who were launching their new program Kinvoke, at iBody, Denver. In the span of 48 hours, Helen was able to enjoy a beautiful mountain drive, reconnect with dear friends, and come away inspired not only to live life to the fullest but also with a renewed understanding of the need to care for both body and mind and the vital importance of community.

Saturday Morning Afro Celt Dancing

Super excited to be sharing this special Saturday, 10am Class via Zoom. The AfroCelt Experience leads us through a journey of discovery, with the Core and Extremities (Legs and Arms).

In relationship with “The Controller”, our inner guide who helps us move, think, create and more, we explore:

Like a tightrope walker who trains for years, the Controller brings steadiness and calm focus. Our ordinary walk naturally shifts and spirals, but the Controller helps transform uncontrolled motion into deliberate, balanced steps. Begin with the 8:45am Soma 5 Stages of Development, where we introduce the concept of The Controller both cognitively and somatically. This class is most often is described as a luxurious healing hour of setting the focus for the 10am movement experience that follows.

What if clarity didn’t come from effort, but from listening?

In tomorrow’s Soma Movement Meditation, we’ll explore the Controller; the inner intelligence that helps us orient, organize, and move through life with steadiness and choice. Rather than forcing control, this practice invites the body to remember how wise leadership naturally develops.

We’ll move gently through the five developmental stages we all learned as infants: embryonic, creeping, crawling, standing, and walking.

Each stage reveals a different quality of the Controller:

  1. presence (Embryonic)

  2. sequencing (Creeping)

  3. coordination (Crawling)

  4. grounded authority (Standing)

  5. responsive direction (Walking)

This is not about “doing it right.”
It’s about allowing order to emerge through the body, your body.

The practice is:

  • Slow and accessible

  • Trauma-sensitive and choice-based

  • Suitable for all bodies and experience levels

  • Grounded in somatic wisdom and embodied awareness

Peter Attia: my "go to" Dr. for longevity

I’ve been in the field of Exercise Physiology for 40 years, and of all the books, programs, and courses I’ve absorbed, Outlive: The Science & Art of Longevity by Peter Attia is hands down my favorite.

Attia uses vivid language to describe this decline. He notes that around age 75, many people "fall off a cliff," experiencing a marked and often sudden decrease in strength, mobility, and overall functional ability. He cautions that if this downward trend is not addressed proactively, it can result in a final decade (ages 75–85) marked by shrinking healthspan and considerable misery. He labels this perilous period the "marginal decade," when a person’s quality of life is most vulnerable. Yet he offers a hopeful counterpoint, arguing that sustained, focused effort on physical health can slow the pace of deterioration. Attia promotes the idea of "training for the Centenarian Decathlon," urging people to prepare now for the practical physical demands of advanced age to blunt the severity of that later-life downturn.

Based on Peter Attia's, M.D., work in Outlive and his 2025 60 Minutes interview, his core philosophy is that we are all on a path of decline and must act proactively against diseases like Alzheimer's decades before symptoms appear.

Learning the news of the death of a very special dear friend, Loretta Milo, we are reminded of the preciousness of life, friendship and family. May we all be encouraged to live life to the full every day, to make that call, to do that thing and don’t wait until tomorrow, as we truly don’t know if it will ever be.

In Loving Memory of Loretta Milo

It is with deep sadness and profound gratitude that I share the passing of Loretta Milo on December 23, 2025.

Loretta was a dear, very special, friend, a sister in Christ, and a gifted teacher whose presence brought wisdom, encouragement, and grace wherever she went. She had a rare way of truly seeing people, offering support not just with words, but with her steady faith, generosity of spirit, and unwavering kindness.

For many of us, Loretta was a guide and a companion on the path of truth and integrity, someone who believed deeply in embodied faith, in community, and in showing up for one another with love. Her support and encouragement meant more than she likely ever knew, and her influence will continue to ripple through the lives she touched.

While our hearts grieve her loss, let’s give thanks for a life so beautifully lived. May we honor Loretta by carrying forward her compassion and her commitment to serving others.

Loretta was a family women with strong faith. I choose to believe she is now in heaven, smiling gently, free of pain, enjoying the big wild party in heaven, waiting for us to join her. While I grieve her loss, I do not grieve without hope. I trust in the promise of eternal life and rest in the assurance that Loretta is now held fully in the love of God she so faithfully served.

Please hold Loretta’s family in your prayers during this tender time. Out of respect for their need to grieve privately, please refrain from contacting them directly. Your prayers, love, and quiet remembrance are the most meaningful gift during this time.

When there is more information to share regarding a service or memorial, I will pass it along as it becomes available.

She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
